Helpful Homework Hints:
For Monday night's homework, students will be asked to "text code and jot thoughts," In other words, the student will need to read the passage once, then reread the passage twice, while completing our close reading activity. The student will be expected to highlight (color) or mark information, based on their thought process. In addition to highlighting (coloring/coding) the information, the student will need to write down thoughts to go along side the information.
For example: If a student were to highlight the sentence "The boy packed up his bags and set out on a big adventure." yellow, then they would need to write done the question they were thinking near the highlighted sentence. (For example: Where is the boy going? ...Is anyone else going on this adventure?...Why is he going on this adventure?...etc.)
If a student highlights/circles an unknown word orange, then he/she needs to try their best to determine the meaning of the word using resources such as context clues, a dictionary, or an adult.
If a student seeing interesting information, then they will color it purple and write exactly why they find the statement interesting. If the child has a text to self, text to text, or text to world connection, then they should color it green and write down their connection. If a child reads a statement that is important to the text, then they should color it blue. The student is encouraged to ask themselves "is this information that I should remember for future reference?" The students do not need to jot their thoughts for important information.
